Gresham, Smith and Partners, a national engineering, planning, architecture and interior design firm, announced that it has been awarded a contract from the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP), a research program managed by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies.
The research conducted through this project will describe opportunities for using Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology to help travelers simply, efficiently and interactively evaluate their airport ground transportation options to and from an airport. Subsequently, a guidebook and interactive CD will be prepared for use by airport operators in cooperation with transportation service providers to develop and implement a framework for seamless ITS solutions, customizable to their own airport environment.
The objectives of the guidebook include addressing both existing and emerging technologies for presenting useful travel information; addressing all possible types of ground transportation options available to travelers to and from an airport; identifying options for providing interactive pre-trip planning using real-time information on ground access services and facilities; and developing functional specifications for, and a mock-up of, a Web-based or other technology-based information delivery system for trip planning, adaptable for use at a wide variety of airports with a reasonable degree of commonality.
