House Panel Marks Up Bill Banning Cell Phone Use In Flight

top story photo The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Thursday approved an amended version of "The Hang Up Act," H.R. 5788, which would prohibit the use of cell phones in flight.

Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee James Oberstar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore), Jerry Costello (D-Ill.), John Duncan (R-Tenn.) and Thomas Petri (R-Wis.) introduced the legislation in May 2008 in response to the European Union's announcement that it will allow passengers on all commercial airlines to talk on their cell phones while a plane is in the air. Currently U.S. airlines are experimenting with in-flight Internet access.
